Your university’s careers service offers free advice from trained professionals.
To help you make the most of this invaluable resource, we've put together a list of five things not to forget:
1. Book an appointment
It sounds obvious, but wandering into your careers service and expecting advice when it suits you is not ideal for an adviser, and you're likely to be asked to make an appointment for a one-to-one session. Make booking your appointment a priority – when you have, you'll have a deadline for preparing yourself ahead of your meeting.
2. Consider some of your preferred career options
...and why you're interested in them. Doing so will help your adviser understand your ambitions, and advise you on which are the most realistic and how you can achieve them. Careers advisers should then be able to suggest action plans to help you narrow down your options and start boosting your employability.
3. Draft a CV and take it with you
Your careers adviser will be happy to look over your CV and give you advice on how to improve it. By taking along a CV, or a couple of drafts geared towards different jobs if you're still undecided, your adviser will find it easier to understand your best career fit and explain how you can tailor your CV to each role and make it shine.
4. Make use of the library
There are so many books about careers, you'll be hard-pushed to choose the best one for your specific needs. Ask your adviser for some recommendations and they should be able to point you towards the most useful resources.
5. Book a follow-up appointment
As with making an appointment in the first place, arranging a second meeting will encourage you to actively work on your career planning and applications, and also ensure the advice you're given doesn't sit unused in a notepad on your desk for months.
